Over the past four years, EMP has maintained a fatality rate of 0, demonstrating a strong commitment to safety. In 2023, the company recorded only one long-term injury, resulting in an LTIR (Lost Time Injury Rate) of 0.022. This marks a slight improvement over the 2022 performance, driven by an increase in total hours worked. Despite this progress, EMP still has the opportunity to further enhance its LTIR by implementing additional safety protocols aimed at achieving its goal of zero long-term injuries.
Health and safety initiatives in 2023
EMP’s focus on its health and safety initiatives for the coming year are to strengthen safety fundamentals, improve performance and maintaining a strong culture of safety.
EMP has implemented several initiatives to advance health and safety management in 2023.
A core component of the initiative has been the launch of EMP “Road to Operations Excellence” campaign. This is a dynamic initiative aimed at bolstering Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) standards across the organization. These campaigns have been rolled out through a multifaceted approach, incorporating activities such as Safety, Health, and Environment (SHE) group meetings, strategic management visits, and the integration of SHE Talks in every meeting.
In addition, we’ve engaged our teams with various competitions aligned with National Safety and Health at Work Month and Environment Day. To further enrich our safety culture, we’ve leveraged a range of audio and visual communication tools, including educational videos like “SHE in Five Minutes” and “ObseSHE,” as well as wall calendars and persuasive posters designed to reinforce safe behaviors. Additionally, EMP has launched SHEeds videos explaining health and safety procedures in a more digestible way.
Additionally, to ensure continued competence in health and safety, EMP has implemented several training programs in topics such as firefighting, first aid, behaviour change and chemical spill management.

Health and safety management system
Health and safety practice in EMP is guided by our Operations Excellence Management System (OEMS). EMP’s OEMS is aligned with local regulations and international standards including ISO14001 and ISO45001. The OEMS is applied to all of the company‘s operations, encompassing the group and all of its subsidiaries.
Operations Excellence Management System (OEMS) that has been established by the Company, is used as a standard guideline for the management of SMK3LL which consists of the 12 following elements:

A key element to the OEMS is our hazard identification and risk assessment procedure. To identify risks, the following procedures are used:

To manage the risks identified, a risk mitigation hierarchy is applied including through elimination, reduction of risk, substation, implementation of engineering controls, implementation of administrative control and using personnel protective equipment. These risks are regularly identified, prioritized and mitigated throughout the year across all areas in EMP.
EMP recognizes that it is not entirely possible to avoid all health and safety risks. As such, it has also implemented an emergency preparedness procedure to manage such events. These plans include the identification of necessary equipment, training, and personnel to safeguard personnel, the public, materials, the environment, assets, and the company’s reputation in the event of an incident. EMP has an internal manual which describes classifies possible emergencies and crisis into three levels. Each level has an expected response and levels of oversight from site to HQ. EMP will communicate progress of the event to all relevant stakeholders. To continuously enhance the effectiveness of these plans, the company conduct regular drills and exercises, utilizing the results to update and improve its emergency and crisis management strategies.
To ensure competency of all personnel on aspects of health and safety and to promote a strong safety culture, EMP engages employees with various HSE activities, including training sessions, coaching clinics, campaigns, safety meetings, and safety inductions. Employees who are exposed to significant health and safety risks have mandatory trainings and are required to be certified prior to carrying out certain tasks on site.
To ensure the proper implementation of our OEMS, EMP conducts internal audits on an annual basis to ensure that the OEMS stays compliant and achieves its intended objectives of ensuring the health and safety of our operations. Additionally, these internal audits are carried out to ensure readiness of operations to be externally certified. For all sites that have been certified by ISO45001, ISO14001 PROPER, recertification audits are carried out once every three years to ensure continued alignment with the standard.
We expect all employees to actively engage in our Health, Safety, and Environmental Protection (HSE) initiatives. Participation in these programs is essential for achieving operational excellence and meeting our HSE goals, which include promoting behaviors that are safe, health-conscious, and environmentally friendly. Leadership at every level, particularly heads of functions and business units, is tasked with meeting health and safety targets as part of their KPI. The Vice President of Safety, Health, and Environment is responsible for reporting performance to the CEO/Director of EMP.
