Located in Sofala Province, Mozambique, the Buzi EPCC project is a
promising near-production asset spanning over 7,653.43 km².
Operated under a cost recovery term, the project is led by Buzi
Hydrocarbon Pte. Ltd. (BHPL), holding a 75% participating interest, a
subsidiary of EMP, with Empresa Nacional de Hidrocarbonetos (ENH)
retaining the remaining 25%. Since 2012, the block has undergone
extensive exploration, beginning with 615 km of 2D seismic acquisition,
followed by seismic reprocessing and interpretation. A major
breakthrough came in 2020, with the successful drilling of BS-01 and
BS-02, confirming significant gas discoveries in 2021, marking a crucial
step toward commercialization. With production now on the horizon,
the appraisal phase has focused on 1050 km 2D seismic acquisition
and appraisal well drilling. The submission of the Pre – Plan of
Development (POD) in 2024 represents a key milestone, alongside the
drilling of BS-03 and the workover of BS-02, aimed at optimizing gas
production.
As a result, the Buzi Field is set to commence first gas production in
2027, with an expected production of 12 MMSCFD. Supporting this
development are production facilities and integrated infrastructure,
ensuring efficient operations and long-term sustainability. Looking
ahead, the Buzi EPCC commercialization strategy is centered on
multiple gas monetization pathways. A primary focus is the gas sales
to the 60 MW Independent Power Producer (IPP) facility, providing a
stable electricity supply. With the substation located ~17 km from Buzi
Field, power can be transmitted domestically or exported to South
Africa. Additionally, the gas pipeline to industries presents a strategic
opportunity, as Buzi Block is adjacent to the Rompco pipeline, which
connects Temane (Mozambique) to Secunda (South Africa), granting
access to South Africa’s vast gas market.
Furthermore, given Buzi’s proximity to the shoreline, Liquefied Natural
Gas (LNG) production is a viable option, enabling gas monetization
through international exports. As it transitions from exploration to
production, it is set to provide reliable natural gas supply to
industries, communities, and regional markets, while maximizing
value through cost recovery mechanisms.
